For the short-distance crowd, the Paynes Creek state Historic Site,has a 1.2-mile trail through The site of the long-gone Fort Chokonikla, which Was active during the Second Seminole Indian War (1835-42), a two-mile trail shared with bikers and a four-miler shared with bikers and horseback riders. There are interpretive exhibits on the Seminoles, the fort and its trading post. To get there, follow US 17 south of Bartow 22 miles to Bowling Green, turn left on Hwy 664-A and drive to the entrance. Three water management districts offer five hiking tracts in the counties.
